Even long before Christianity reached the snowy peaks of the Alps, ancient folklore spoke of terrifying demons roaming the harsh winter landscape around the winter solstice. Over time, these fearsome figures merged into a single iconic entity: Krampus, the horned beast who became the dark counterpart to Saint Nicholas. Where the kindly saint brought gifts to reward well-behaved children, Krampus hunted down the misbehaved to punish them. He was, in essence, the original Bad Santa.
